Itinerary
You will be collected from you hotel or accommodation establishment at 08:00. The road to
Henties Bay will be the main route we will follow today to see the wonders of the West Coast. Our first stop will
be at the Lichen Fields just past Wlotzka’s Baken. This lichen field is about 400 kilometres square and houses one
of the most extraordinary lichen communities in the world. Both the “rock covering” and endolithic lichens are
found here. The endolithic lichens are found inside porous rocks and cracks.
When finished with this wonderland of plants we head to Cape Cross Seal Reserve. This Reserve is one of the
smallest Game Reserves in Namibia, and was proclaimed specifically for the protection of the Cape Fur Seal.
Walking on the raised walkway you can get extremely close to these strange creatures. The noise
and the smell are sometimes overwhelming, but one soon gets used to it. To observe them in their natural
environment is something special. The pups are playful, while the cows will keep a constant eye on them to prevent
the occasional Black Backed Jackal from taking one. The bulls are big and not as energetic as the rest, until
disturbed.
Lunch will be had at one of the picnic sites inside the game reserve. Depending on the wind
direction your guide will put up and set the table for a delicious lunch. Fresh breads and rolls with cold meats.
Cheese and fresh salads complete the main course. Sparkling wine or fruit juice can be enjoyed with your lunch as
you listen to the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
On our way back to Swakopmund we will stop at a shipwreck just south of Henties Bay. This
trawler ran aground in 2009 and is a stark reminder why this is called the “Skeleton Coast” To enhance your
experience of the west coast, the guide will follow the beach line as you head to Swakopmund, explaining and
pointing out interesting features along the way.
You will be back at your accommodation at about 17:00, after a full day on the Skeleton Coast Namibia.
