WALK FOR LIONS 2008

Sponsor a Namibian Student and
help mitigate Human-Wildlife Conflict in Namibia
Support of this community commenced in 2005 when the AFRI-LEO FOUNDATION donated fencing material for the repair of the fence-line separating this farmland from the adjacent game-park.
The community welcomed the assistance and in no time had organised patrols
and regular maintenance of this fence, reducing their livestock losses to
approx. 5 during
the first half of 2006.
The AFRI-LEO FOUNDATION initiated the idea of developing a Livestock
Protection Unit (LPU), with the main objective to assist and advise farmers
on improved livestock protection methods.
Repair and maintenance of fence-lines is but one of the methods – the other,
more effective, long-term solution is to employ herdsman to protect the
livestock during the day whilst out grazing and the ‘penning’ (‘kraaling’)
of livestock in strong ‘kraals’ or pens, at night.

During the 2nd half of 2006, bore-holes dried up in
the adjacent game-park and elephant herds began moving through the recently
repaired fence-line, in search of water on farmland. Needless to say, large
sections of the fence were destroyed and left the distressed farmers in need
of alternative solutions!
As water shortages, the migration of elephants as well as
farmer – predator conflict are on-going issues on Namibia’s farmland,
AFRI-LEO’s LPU must develop ways of
continued
support for these farming communities.
But how do we go about guiding the younger generation to improve on the
existing farming and livestock protection methods, once they return to their
communities after school?

The
AFRI-LEO Environmental Education Programme does just that and by SPONSORING
a student who comes from one of the farming communities, to join the ‘WALK
FOR LIONS 2008’, you will be helping him / her to uplift the entire
community.
The opportunity to spend time with Swiss students of the same age and to
exchange ideas and ideals, will be a life-changing experience for both the
Namibian child and the Swiss Student.
Funds generated from the ‘WALK FOR LIONS 2008’ will be used to further
develop the Livestock Protection Unit (LPU), as well as support the
Environmental Education and
Awareness Programmes.
